Poisonous dart frogs

Postby phea2 on 27 Jan 2017 02:02

Hi, I know there was a thread or 2 on here a while ago about few fish keepers on here keeping poisonous dart frogs as well. I'm in the process of setting up a vivarium and wondering if any of you on here would be able to share their experience with PDF. I've attached a picture of my vivarium, no frogs in yet. It's the 60x45x60 exo terra tank, im waiting to get more plants in and still debating whether to get some leucomelas or cobalt tincs.

It looks great.

In my experience

don't bother with tropical springtails, they always seems to die out
I added native springtails and woodlice and they seemed to do better
never let ants into your terrarium, it is like heaven for them
buy plants in Tesco, Aldi etc., they thrive in terrariums
for aquarium plants Anubias do great
If you want moss to grow in the terrarium blend some Java moss up into a paste and spread it in situ
in about 6 weeks it'll start to thrive
try to circulate the water if you can
standing water will start to smell in no time
get some ficus sp. plants, they are just nuts for growing fast and providing plenty of cover
they also will root down into the water and purify it
Make sure to buy good quality calcium/vitamin D to sprinkle food with
Invest in mite proof paper and spray to keep your fruit fly cultures good
you will be more of a fly keeper than a frog keeper
Keep up a good misting regime

I don't remember what are the exact names of the cleaning crue I got but they are springtails and woodlice.

I don't have any water feature only the false bottom and I will add a half coconut shell upside down put some water in it for them.

I'm also going to get some moss to cover the back and part of the branches but not sure what one yet. I want few dwarf ferns in there as well growing on the blackground. Any idea what kind of orchids I can use in?

Im misting 3 times a day now with a spray bottle but investing in a mister in few weeks. I need to get a good hydrometer to check the humidity. I got an exo terra hydrometer with the tank (second hand) but i don't think it's working.

This looks amazing Pascal!!

Good luck and keep us posted.

By the way. I see you are using maxspect r420r 120w on this built. Are you perhaps still looking to sell it? I got your other one so would be interested in getting this one too in a little while. Let me know.

Seb.

Yeah I still have it, it's there as a temporary measure. I'm getting a 50w flood light for the vivarium. Send me a message whenever you are ready and we'll take it from there.
